Following the success of his presentation last year on David Bowie, Adrian Wootton CEO of Film London, is back and this year he turns his spotlight on The Who. His talk, lavishly illustrated with clips and slides, marks the 50th anniversary of the release of Tommy, Ken Russell’s outrageous and highly popular film musical adaptation of The Who’s classic rock opera. Adrian, all round film and music aficionado will reveal the behind-the-scenes stories revealing the dramatic, sometimes chaotic making of Tommy and look back at the legendary rock band’s other adventures on screen.
TOMMY:
This is the story of Tommy who, when just a boy, witnessed the murder of this father by his mother (Ann-Margret) and her lover (Oliver Reed). As a result, the traumatized boy retreats into the shadows of his mind and becomes deaf, mute, and blind. Growing into manhood, Tommy (Roger Daltrey) is subjected to several bizarre cure attempts by The Acid Queen (Tina Turner), The Preacher (Eric Clapton), and The Specialist (Jack Nicholson). Tommy’s only escape is through playing pinball and his devotion and skill grow as he faces The Pinball Wizard (Elton John) and attains a devoted cult following
